Instructions for Dipping Bears!

Melt the wax ( you will want to use a Pillar wax for your dipping), generally you will use about 1 pound of wax per bear.  To melt you can use one of the following methods. You can use a double boiler, or boil water in a larger pot with the wax melting in second smaller pot inside the first. You can also use a turkey roaster, deep fryer or crock pot. The average wax temperature is 170-200º F.  After you have the wax melted, turn heat source off so that it does not exceed 200º F. If the wax is too hot, the bear can shrink and become misshapen.

  • After getting the wax totally melted, you can add in the fragrance.  You will typically want to use 1 1/2 oz of fragrance per pound of wax.
  • Stir in the fragrance well and then you can add dye to match darker or colored bears allowing it to blend better with the material.
  • Once you have stirred everything well, use a pair of tongs and dip your bear in the wax for about 2 min or until it is saturated.
  • Using your tongs pull the bear out of the wax.  Have a aluminum turkey pan with a screen over it to set saturated bear on.  Squeeze the bear and get the excess wax to drain into your pan.  Wax can be remelted for next bear.  It is adviseable to wear gloves as wax is extremely HOT!  I have found that using the tongs or other utensils helps in getting the extra wax out of the bear.
  • Before bear is totally cooled use a large tooth comb to comb or fluff the hair. Longer hair requires more fluffing. You will want to do this before the wax hardens.
  • When your bear is cool to the touch you can put it on a cooking sheet to finish drying. Pose your bear and let it stand for about 2 hours.
  • Once completely cooled you can package them in a cellophane bag and tie with a decorative ribbon. We recommend enclosing some instructions for care if you plan to sell your bears such as the following:
  1. Wax-dipped animals should not sit directly on wood. A dish, glass or metal, will protect the wood surface from stain by the oils in the wax.

  2. You will want to keep the bear out of the reach of children because they are no longer toys.

  3. Wax dipped bears are not meant to be burned.
